Battery-powered devices of all kinds are on the rise worldwide. The products have long since gone far beyond DIY applications, and rechargeable batteries are increasingly finding their way into the professional sector. The development does not stop at firefighting fans or rescue tools. Today, a modern rechargeable battery can easily meet the correspondingly high requirements, as long as a few points are taken into account when purchasing and caring for it.

Integrated battery or exchangeable battery?
With a large number of firefighting fans, there are some devices that rely on the technology of an integrated battery. Other manufacturers focus on replaceable batteries. But what are the advantages of the respective technologies? Sure, a removable battery promises an infinite power source for your high-powered fan, at least on paper, but there are also some weighty drawbacks to this design. Firefighting fans draw a high amount of power from the battery during operation, which must be transferred from the battery to the positive-pressure fan. All components in the system must be able to handle this power demand. The battery must have sufficient discharge capacity. Cables and connectors must be able to handle the required power.

Replaceable batteries have to provide this power via additional connectors, but these lose efficiency over time. As a result, the performance of your fan also decreases. The result is, for example, lower fan performance or less battery life and, as a result, batteries often become hot, which greatly shortens the life of the batteries.

Replaceable batteries are subject to higher mechanical and thermal wear and do not always fit all rescue equipment carried in your vehicle. Today, exchangeable batteries are regarded as consumables in common firefighting practices and are to be added to the equipment price over its years of use.

Good to know
Modern high-performance batteries should be optimally protected against mechanical damage so as not to pose a safety risk. Integrated batteries are much better protected against mechanical damage than replaceable batteries, which can sometimes fall to the ground. The integrated design also enables a better waterproof and dustproof construction and can also be opened at any time for service access.

Nevertheless, the successful BLOWHARD BATTERY models are now also available as a PURE ELECTRIC version BLOWHARD ELEKTRO. The big advantage is the lower weight. All other performance values remain the same. Those who wish can easily upgrade their device with a rechargeable battery at a later date.


BLOWHARD uses integrated rechargeable batteries combined with the specially developed Dual-Power System. Dual-Power blowers can be operated with battery or in mains mode and are easier to use as well as more portable and compact than devices with additional external charging technology for exchangeable batteries.

When a positive pressure fan is used in battery operation, it may be necessary in rare cases to ventilate beyond the capacity limit of the battery. In such situations, the PPV positive pressure fan must also be able to run in mains operation. It must be possible to change the power source to mains operation without complications. Two decisions can now be made with the power supplied via the mains.

  • Exclusive operation of the fan and thus maximum focus on the success of the application
  • Additional charging of the battery and thus reduced performance for use at the fire scene

On closer examination, the selection of the second variant hardly makes sense, since it minimizes the ventilation success at the fire scene. This creates a new and insufficiently plannable situation to which the first rescuer must react.

Charging electronics:
BLOWHARD uses a charger already integrated in the unit and matched to the battery. The fans can remain plugged in on the vehicle with 220-240 V and the integrated charging electronics ensure optimal charging and life of your battery, as it balances the battery and protects it from deep discharges or overcharges, always keeping it optimally ready for use. A permanent coupling to the charging electronics is extremely important for the health of the battery. Care should be taken with external chargers to ensure that the charging electronics do not limit the maximum number of charging cycles. This can be the case if chargers do not correspond with the electronics built into the battery.

Energy switchover:
Another point of attention is the energy switchover between the battery and mains operation. It is important to know that the switchover is automatic and that the positive pressure ventilator does not interrupt its operation in the process. If ventilation is interrupted at any point during the operation and additional personnel action must be taken, the success of the operation will be minimized. Blowers that can seamlessly and automatically switch from battery to mains operation (and back) without interrupting ventilation are advantageous and save the first rescuer a lot of time.

Good to know
A 220-240 V connection is available at most fire scenes via generator or the fire engine has such a connection. Thanks to the integrated charger, it is not necessary to carry an additional charger with BLOWHARD. The complex cable management on the vehicle for different chargers is no longer necessary. Moreover, with today’s battery and charging technology, it takes longer to charge replaceable batteries than it does to consume a battery charge in ventilation mode. In other words, they need many exchangeable batteries and must assign a person to constantly charge or change batteries. The personnel resources required in this respect must therefore also be taken into account from the outset.

In the case of fans with replaceable batteries, the charger must also be carried along. Given the number of battery-powered devices on a rescue vehicle, this means a large amount of space is required and often also an impenetrable tangle of cables. In addition, each battery should be operated with the charger provided for it, as this is the only way to ensure that the electronics of the charger communicate with those of the battery and to avoid damage to the battery or vehicle technology.

Good to know
For example, to achieve a fan output of 8,000 CFM (13,590 m3/h) with a BLOWHARD COMMANDO for 6 hours, you would need one battery charge. With a commercially available battery-powered fan with replaceable batteries, you would need to carry up to 8 batteries unless you temporarily charge them. If these batteries are charged in the meantime, it is about 2 batteries less with a charging cycle of 3 hours. This is because charging replaceable batteries with today’s battery and charging technology also takes longer than it takes to consume a battery charge in ventilation mode.


If the amount of energy is not sufficient, it is obvious to use either larger batteries or alternating batteries, as discussed in the previous chapter. In this chapter, we focus on integrated high-performance batteries and look at the framework conditions

Topic 1 – Energy quantity
The argument of using batteries that are as large as possible soon reaches its limits since weight and size are important for mobile fans. For these and cost reasons, it does not make sense to extend the performance of the battery without limitation. It is important to ensure that the battery size and the size of the device are matched to each other. But there are important solutions that can avoid an oversized and heavy battery. The way BLOWHARD follows here is a highly efficient operation of the fan. An efficient overpressure fan, which shines through efficient air management, requires a smaller amount of energy for the same performance values. An overly large battery is thus avoided.

Topic 2 – Battery load
Larger batteries are thermally less stressed during discharge and charging than one or smaller batteries. The reason: Large batteries deliver their energy in a range that is less critical for their service life than one or smaller batteries. If the battery moves in the limited range of its maximum power output, the performance of the respective battery decreases. This circumstance is reached faster with several small batteries than with one large battery since these must stay more in the limit range mentioned above. Thus, you have the choice between the options life span or power output. It can be said that this circumstance is aggravated the more power is demanded by the consumer. If the load remains high, the battery gets hotter and the lifespan is shortened.

Does more battery capacity provide more flexibility?
Our clear answer: Neither the largest possible nor exchangeable batteries provide maximum flexibility. It is much more important to ensure that the entire system is optimally coordinated in order to achieve maximum flexibility in use. In addition, it depends on the importance you attach to ecological aspects (use of raw materials, power consumption) and which requirements (mileage, charging capacity) are desired, and which reserves should be planned for use.

  • Short operations tend to require a smaller battery, but large batteries offer more reserves
  • Small buildings tend to require a smaller battery, but large batteries offer more reserves
  • Long operations tend to require a large battery
  • Large buildings tend to require a large battery and tend to require larger fans

A large battery, on the other hand, is the better choice for you if …

  • Your positive pressure ventilator is located in places where it cannot be charged or operated with main power.
  • you want to pay attention to lifetime costs and low service costs
  • you simply want to have more reserves in fan use
